I have a 110g tank (48long x 18wide x 30deep)
Mostly tetras and danio and half dozen tall plants.
I have seen some used power compacts ( 36" - 192w) for about $100 and I have seen a 250w mh HQI pendant for about $200.
any suggestions on either of these or other suggestions?

winland Hey windland! It really depends on the type of plants you have and/or want to have. Since we don't know what kind of plants you have here is a great site to find your information. The three articles under the Lighting & Equipment section will explain the types of lighting relative to freshwater plants. The section called Choosing Plants will help you identify your plants. Once identified, relate each plant to the type of lighting you learned about in the first section based on the wattage, spectrum, etc. needs of those plants. This should help you determine wich lighting path to take based on your plants!

since we have no idea what kind of plants u'r using. my usual light of choice when i'm not exactly sure what i'm going to get yet is the coralife twin t-5 setup. they come with a blue spectrum light designed to make the colors in u'r tetras and such pop and a green spectrum light designed as a general plant growth light. works wonders on my swords and onions and such. either way whatever you decide to go with gl.
