How would this look, would it shine enough lights to light up the ends of the tank if I were to center it.  Probably a 6 bulb t5 fixture.

There is a big price jump from 48" to 72" fixtures, trying to keep the cost down.

Anyone have any pics also.

I would say no, but I've never done it...it also depends on what you plan on keeping. With that light you'd only be able to keep low light corals (medium would be a stretch). I have an 8 bulb fisture over a 4 foot tank to give you an idea.

Although its pricey - lighting is perhaps the most important consideration for corals. (aside from water quality). Its really the life system of your tank. If it were me, I'd go for the 72" with more bulbs. Just think, down the road you may want the higher light corals - and you'll have to buy a new fixture, that would be spending twice as much money later. (the one now, and the pricier one later). Even if you don't now, you can only use say 6 bulbs in an 8 bulb fixture until you go for the higher light corals. That's the best part about t-5's - the versatility.

I agree....I have done something very similiar to this before and was unhappy. Are you going to get some spectrum in the corners yes but not enough to be happy with or to support coral life. As stated above the light is the most expensive investment however the most important. If your trying to cut back on money and are happy with a fish only or soft corals (maybe some hard) buy they fixture your talking about and pull it apart so that you can stagger the bulbs into a canopy. Also look at an icecap retro kit.

If you don't mine how it looks and you don't keep the coral out near the ends then it will work.... I did this temporarily a few years back and the lower light coral I was keeping did ok.

I'd keep my eye out for used lighing systems and try to get a longer one.... even consider using metal halide-- there are deals to be found if you can be patient..
