Just moved in the newest residents of my 180g tank.
10 endlicheri bichirs and 1 ornate bichir. They are all little 4" babies right now, but will grow to 2'+ monsters given time.
I'll get a pic of the ornate later, he hid as soon as I put him in the tank.

Nah, they are bichirs, polypterus endlicheri. Those external gills on them will go away after a while. They only have them when they are young.

Bichirs are known to "pile up" in corners of tanks. It looks awesome when they do, and the more bichirs the better the pile! About 8 of them were in this pile till I scared them away with the camera, only these guys were left. Also got a pic of the ornate bichir, not the greatest, but you can see the difference between him and the endlis. And.....a pic of the senegal that's been in there since the beginning.

Very cool fish!
But I have a question. Why and how did you choose the tile uh...."substrate"?

I'm a big fan of barebottom tanks painted black on the bottom. The previous owner of this tank did not take the paper off of the bottom of the tank until several years later. Removing stubborn paper that's been basically "glued" to acrylic for years is a pain in the a$$, and I'm impatient. It looked horrible. So to get the benefit of barebottom with some aesthetic appeal I went with tile. To be honest this tile was much darker when I picked it out. The light makes it much brighter than I thought it would be. This is good for the rays because lighter substrate brings out their patterns more, but bad for the bichirs because it washes out their patterns. Once the rays outgrow the tank, I'll probably switch to a gloss black ceramic tile like I planned in the first place.

Those are very cool(and interesting!) fish! I really love the rays, but those birchers are very striking. I had to go google 'em after seeing your pix.
