We're looking to cut down our monthly bills, and I think dropping cable might be an option.  We watch it a lot, but we also stream episodes of the shows we watch from our pc to our tv all the time.  With so much available online, I'm thinking I can cut my bill down to just the cable modem.  The locals still come in, not that we watch them for anything but sports anyway.  Has anyone else tried this?

Dont they charge more for the cable internet if you dont have the tv service to go with it?

I went without cable when I moved to Ann Arbor for about 4 months.  I bought a wireless repeater to put in my garage to help relay my neighbors internet to my house and used theirs for a while.  In the end after 4 months It drove me crazy and I had to buy cable again!

Although I did end up reading a lot of good books.

We have the basic channels for 12 dollars... Don't miss all the other stuff... Also road runner light is 20 a month for 12 months right now. Check that out. Our monthly bill is about 39 dollars with taxes and everything...

I haven't had cable TV for the past 9 months.  We have the DTV converter box and get enough channels for our viewing habits.  We mostly watch PBS during the week and then most sports are on the local channels during weekends.  Its certainly nice not to have that bill every month.

We have Buckeye, they aren't cheap, but they have good customer service.  When we lived in Pittsburgh the cable company there was awful.  Abysmally awful.

We haven't had it in several years- the $50+ per month was just adding up to too much money. Having the multiple DTV stations helps some- Peg likes some of the shows on Create, and RTN has shown some coool stuff on Offbeat Cinema- You Dig, Daddy-O?

I had to go with Timewarner when I moved out here.  We pay about $110/month for 1 dvr box and roadrunner.  We're online all the time so dropping the cable modem isn't an option, but going down to just roadrunner would roughly cut the bill in half.  I'm not sure if roadrunner light would be enough for streaming like we do, and will if we drop the tv channels we'll be streaming everything.  My pc can easily replace the DVR.

My in-laws pay buckeye about $100 for phone, internet, and cable.  TW wants another $50 for the phone.  Buckeye may seem like they have a monopoly, but you guys really don't have it that bad.

I used to be an installer for buckeye so I may seem biased, but I always had late calls where someone demanded that I fix whatever was wrong that day.  I was at a few houses until around midnight getting their stuff fixed, and buckeye paid for the overtime.  They really do have great customer service when you compare them to the other cable companies.  Also, their guys are teamsters.  Its not like the "contractors" TW uses.  The guy who "installed" my TW setup took so many shortcuts he had to give me a spool of cable and some splitters so I could fix it myself.  Buckeye has guys who check the work of their installers to make sure they're doing it right.  I'd go with buckeye in a heartbeat if they came out here.

You might want to look into Directv or Dish Network.  Right now I have Dish network, runs me about $65.

I pay about $129 for TW for Cable, Phone, Internet-- I do have pretty much all their "basic": channels, no premium channels (HBO, Showtime, Stars, etc)- internet and phone add up to about $65 to $70, the rest is TV

I liked them alot til we bought our HDTV last month. Other then the price for the DVR-- they ding you twice-- once for the box and again for the DVR service which is about $18 month)-- they have free HD channels but in my area, I have only a few-- and TBS looks like crap-- lots of signal loss... I don't watch alot of ESPN but we have ESPN and ESPN2 in HD.... then the local channels and thats it... they do have some Free Video on Demand stuff in HD from some other channels-- not alot on there either-- standard definition TV does NOT look very good on a big screen (58" plasma)

It would be worth it if we had their full HD lineup--  for that reason alone, we will likely keep the phone and internet and switch our TV to dish network-- we had it before and I own a Dish network box with built in DVR so won't have that expense-- I will need to put in a bigger hard drive-- (I think it is only 20 gig or so)-- as it will only hold about 10 hours of HD programming-- Dish has some good specials on for new customers-- can get a pretty low price for a while-- and they do carry local channels.

If you've got a fast computer. MythTV might be a way to get your very own DVR working on your computer. And it's free, which is always good!
