Economy too sour for Sweet Feed
Pet supplies store tries to hang on

The Sweet Feed Co., an independent pet supplies superstore chain in the Toledo area for 26 years, is struggling and may not survive the winter, one of its founders said Friday.

"We are going to try to hang in as long as we can. But in this economy, it is not looking too promising," said Sweet Feed vice president Jeff Tormoehlen, who with his siblings Doug and Lori Tormoehlen, founded the company in 1983.

A decade after its founding, Sweet Feed gained a reputation as a local-based pet supplies superstore that carried unique items and products not found at competitors' stores. Operating out of a store on Whiteford Center Road near Alexis Road, the company grew to add two more stores, in south Toledo and Oregon, employing 80 workers.

But in May, it closed the south Toledo store on Reynolds Road, and two weeks ago, it closed the Oregon store on Starr Avenue. All that remains is a Secor Road store in Lambertville that replaced the Whiteford Center Road store several years ago. The Lambertville store has a dozen workers.

"Our Lambertville store had a [horse] tack shop and we closed that down last year. That's been a dwindling market as many people cannot afford to keep or board horses," Mr. Tormoehlen said.

Customers who patronized the Oregon store have been showing up at the Lambertville store, which is encouraging, Mr. Tormoehlen said. But for the last few years, Sweet Feed lost its competitive edge and the recent recession has only made things more difficult, he added.

"What separated Sweet Feed from the chains is that we have built our business around products they didn't want to take on when they came into the market. These were new products and good products and we had a number of exclusive arrangements with the companies that made these products," Mr. Tormoehlen said. "But several of those companies were bought out by investment groups who wanted to put those products everywhere they could. We lost many of those exclusive arrangements and when our competition got ahold of those products, they used them as loss leaders to gain market share."

The economy, Mr. Tormoehlen added, has sharply curtailed customers' spending on pet supplies.

"Many of the extras people would look for before, like large bird cages, or even large birds, that part of the market has all but disappeared," he said. "Large aquarium setups or other high-ticket items, we have found that, in large part, people just aren't spending the money on those things. They are just gearing down."

Thats too bad about Sweet Feed..  I use to go to there location in south toledo.  They use to have a nice 9$ frag tank there I would raid frequently.  Then one day they got rid of all their saltwater items.

Don't forget to Vote Today..
