My Marine Science classes have grown over the years to a point where I am sort of out of ideas when it comes to helping students select a theme for the model aquariums.

Most pick a broad theme such as South American or African etc.  Pretty easy but this is not really what I would like out of their efforts.

Native tanks sound pretty cool but I think that it may be too much of a risk to ok kids going out and netting fish in streams.

So suggested themes please!

remember that the class is over in nine months and they are kids so budgets are going to be very tight

South East Asian Inverts?
Inverts in general?
Or them them to pick a certain country and only stock from that country say for example a Vietnam themed tank?
Check out this site, these are some really good people! http://www.wilmasthecause.org/ They helped me out,i feel adding the site to my Sig is the least i can do.

I think it would be cool if you can get a couple of them to do freshwater planted tanks, but make them all use varied substrates, such as different mud, sand, gravel or mixtures and see what the best combination would be with the same setups.

How old are the kids?

Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks”

11th-12th graders.  I would like to do a planted tank of some sort.  Like that idea.

An invert tank would be interesting, I really don't know much about the freshwater inverts though.

Here's an Idea.  You can work on a tank to raise freshwater mysid shrimp.  Then you would have food for your Marine fish.  Jay Hamdal could probably help you on this as he wrote a paper on it.

Hemdal, Jay. Raising Mysid Shrimp as a Home Aquarium Food. Seascope 2000.

I would like to see this in action and how it works.

Actually it would be kind of neat to setup several tanks to culture the basic food level to enrich your own home grown food for all your fish by starting with Artemia nauplii.

I think you could do natives without turning the kids loose on their own to catch the fish. But you'd have to find someone willing to lead a handful of expeditions.  Perhaps planted with various themes?  I like the idea of using various substrates and comparing.

Boy, I had the wrong science teachers. Where were all of you when I was coming up?

MASSIVE FW SHRIMP RULE: DO NOT DOSE KALK! IT KILLS THEM! as a matter a fact you don't dose anything, the are more sensitive to chemicals in the water than FW shrimp from what i have seen, if your worried about calcium break up a cuttle bone with a hammer and put some in the tank. the like the 6.8 to 7.8 ph range, Lots of moss. 0 ammonia,Nitrates, and Nitrites under 10, (cant remember if nitrate or nitrite is the bad one lol) The seem to be fond of the Algae Wafers and Sinking Shrimp pellets. Umm burks jump in here and help me out and correct my if i got anything wrong.
