REEF MONITOR PRESENTATION

2008 the International Year of the Reef

“IYOR - A worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them.”  www.iyor.org

~ A Seminar ~
In recognition of the “International Year of the Reef”, John W. Turner Jr., Ph.D., will speak about his ongoing research in coral reef ecosystems in the Caribbean.  Dr Turner is a professor of Physiology at the University of Toledo, College of Medicine with his doctorate from Cornell University and postdoctoral training at UCLA. The presentation will focus on the timeline of his reef- stress research spanning the past 13 years, and will address current conditions of reef systems in the US Virgin Islands and Bahamas
.

Without healthy reefs, the homes and nurseries of many marine species, as well as their futures (and ours), are at risk and may be severely compromised.

Developing Researchers of Tomorrow
In addition to the presentation, information will be provided about Reef Monitor, a newly created research and education project aiming to resolve the crisis of coral reef ecosystems through:

  • Performing field and laboratory experiments internationally
  • Training students in this research realm
  • Disseminating knowledge on the subject of reef research via publications and the website ~ www.reefmonitor.org

I had no idea UT had anyone dealing with the reefs like that. Very interesting.

I will certainly try to go. Never been to a program like that.

I will be joining Dr. Turner and his grad assistant Steve for one presentation.  But I don't think it is this one.  We will be sharing what we are doing to take real world science data and make it avalible for High School teachers and thier students to use.  This adds an amazing authentic experience to what would otherwise be boring old labs.

I will find out if the presentation I am going to will be open to the public and post that as well.

I can't speak highly enough of Dr. Turner.  He is truly a brilliant man and passionate about what he does.  I am confident anyone who attends will not be disappointed!

I second that,  his stories and descriptions of what he does and how he came to studying fish are very interesting!!!  I have never been able to get out of his office in less than 3 hours  (not that I would have wanted to leave a second sooner)

You do meet some people who talk alot about the environment etc but its always someone should do something about the problem.  Dr. Turner is a grab it by the horns, passionate how can WE fix this sort of person.  He really buys into what he talks about.

Our joint project does not give him any new money or fame,  He is spending his time because he believes it to be worth his time.  Pretty cool in my book

I know I'll definetly be going.  I hope that a lot of you can make it there as well.  I think this will be an excellent Seminar.  I'm just now finding out about this organization.  Dave why didn't you tell me you were working with him!

I'm really geeked about this.

I got to have some secrets

My work with Dr. Turner's project has been very informal so far but hopefully we will be able to do some good work on the education and public out reach side of his investigations.

I am a tiny fish in that pond for sure!!

I've sent him a message to see if there is anything that TRAC can do to help him out.

Beat me to the punch. I was going to chat with you about that tomorrow at the picnic.

So...I've never been to one of these. Is there like a......dress "code" or anything? I'd hate to offend.
