I have had a significant out break of brysophysis.  I read Burks reefcentral link and have decided to give the over dose of Mg method a shot.  I wish I had not wasted so much time brushing off bryso so that I could provide a photo record of the effort.

For more than a month I have been scrapping the rock with a soft brass bruch to keep the devil under control.  I ran a siphon hose right behind to pick up as much of the broken off algae as possible.

Pray that this works.  If you get the green evil and this does not you too will be doomed to a life of daily rock brushing or watching your corals become over grown by the algae that does not respond to lower  light, lowered feeding, any sort of eater, water changes, pH boosts, or god only knows what else I have tried to get to work.

I  will keep everyone posted as to how long it takes to work and how long  I have to keep the levels elevated to wipe it out for good

I have a quick question for closet chem guys (or gals) or  Brad

Fosters has three different magnesium suppliments Two are liquids and seem pretty much the same other than the labels

the third is a powder which blends other goodies in it.  I am guessing that the powder should not be used as it may boost up my salinity levels.

Not sure if you'd be interested or not but have you checked out MagFlake? Buckeye Field Supply sells it for a pretty good price.

If you don't feel like doing a bunch of math to figure out how much you'll need to boost your levels: reef.diesyst.com/flashcalc/flashcalc.html

Is this on your 220? Looks like it would take over a gallon of the SeaChem stuff to raise your magnesium from 1100ppm to 1600ppm (just guessing at your current levels). MagFlake almost 130oz, Kent tech-M over 200oz, and so on. Magnesium dosing is such a pain!

According to the calculator I need a half a kg to do it.  Not sure how much that is but I am sure it will cost a bit.

On the other hand I will give about anything to beat this crap

is there a local buckeye field supply around.  I know there is one on line but would rather deal locally if I could

plus do you have a clue how I would dose this.  (drip,  dump, etc.) all in  one shot or over a few days ????

Most recommend dosing only 100ppm per day to avoid drastic changes in levels (does something with calcium/alk, I'll have to reread it).

A lot of people just add it during top off.

I've read you can use epson salts to raise your mag.

I read that thread on RC.  People are only having success with using Kent's Tech M.  Any other mag supplements do not eliminate the stuff like Tech M.

any idea why??

I will not waste the money on the cheaper stuff if it does not work

I am not a premium member on reef central so I can't do the search myself but am grateful to those of you who are helping!!!

I dont know why.  The thread was so big that everyone was trying different mag supplements and it just was not doing anything to the bryopsis.  They chalked it up to a certain chemical in Tech M that others didnt have.  The only problem is that it takes alot of Tech M to increase it where you need to be.  They also talked about once the bryopsis was gone they let there mag come back to around 1300 the bryopsis started to return.  Maybe with proper maintanence you can control excess nutrients after treatment that you maybe able to keep it under control.  It is a huge thread, it would take weeks to read it all.

Man I love this hobby.
