Im about to set up a 10g. I have a Few Questions. I have topsoil on hand that i plan to use but it has Peat Moss in it will this be a problem?
Also i have some Inert Black Sand should that go On top of or Under the topsoil?
I have some Small Log that are Hardwood (Oak i believe but not sure) Are they safe to use?
Im planning on DIY co2 run through a maxi jet powerhead. And i have 40 watts over a 10g tank. this will also be my first attempt at Actually setting up the tank and not just tossing the plants in lol

I'd put in an inch or two of soil on the bottom. The peat moss is fine. You can use soil, peat moss, or both mixed together. Put an inch or two of sand on top.
I've always bought wood. I know you need to soak it first, no matter where you get it. If it's old, it's probably okay. If it's fresh, you probably need to weather it first - I can't advise on that.
I ran DIY CO2 for a while, but I didn't use a powerhead. I can't advise on that either.

The black sand will look cool, I think. I don't know enough to answer any questions, but will be waiting eagerly for pix!

I have used a power head to churn up co2 and further mix with the water, I used a 20lb. co2 tank, but I think a diy co2 is plenty for a 10 gallon. 4watts per gallon is a lot of light I believe you would do well to start with fast growing plants or you may have a major algae problem.
Please post pics of your progress, we all like the step by step photos.

ya just waiting on the woman to come up with her Camera as i don't own one and since she lost her job she doesn't visit every weekend anymore. My Aim with this tank is for it to have a lower PH so that i have more plants to chose from. Right now its in the middle of a MASSIVE bacteria bloom and very cloudy. I pre cycled it adding filter matter from an established tank and Mulm from the same tank, so NO CYCLE TIME yay!
