Recently I had an issue with a bag of salt that came from a 200g box (4 bags). The 1st, 2nd, and 4th bags were fine, the 3rd was not.
After mixing the salt it just would not clear up. Even after 24 hours of mixing, still milky. Decided to let it stand for 24 hours and it settled some but not much. Everything had a thin, smooth layer of white paste. So I contacted Instant Ocean about it and they have a replacement bag headed my way.
I did some messing around with the water after talking with a chemistry/oceanographer wiz over on another forum. He wanted me to test my calcium which came out to 250 on that batch, WAY low even for IO. He then wanted me to add some soda water to the mixture and see what happens. Sure enough, the white paste went into solution. Somehow the calcium percipitated out and would not go back into solution. At least we determine WHAT it was but not WHY it happened. Oh well.
Just thought I'd let everyone know if they get a bad batch of salt to contact Instant Ocean (unless your LFS will do it for you, my box came from Tropicorium which was too far to deal with) and let them know what happened. Very nice people.
