One of my brothers who used to have 2 beautiful marine tanks, then had discus, still has a tropical tank and one with former feeder goldfish(his wife's from her pond years ago) came over today to see the mud minnows and check out how the native tank looks with the additional plants.

He mentioned again how surprised he is that these are all native fish-- found in the places we found them and again told me how cool they are(Mr. Personality the Blackside Darter was showing off and the mud minnows were all out doing their hovercraft routine, while the orangethroats kept track of where he was in the room).  His wife was over last weekend and she too was surprised they were all local fish, and she too likes that tank the best of my three I have up.

Baby bro then  told me that when he sets up another tank they'd like to have a native tank, not just for the fish, but also because it's a local thing.  They are like many of us, and try to shop local and whatnot, and think of this as an extension. It's going to be a while- they just had a baby a couple months ago, but I'm delighted that they are interested.  They're both teachers too.

Awesome!

If I had room for a native tank, I'd totally do one. But I doubt there are many that could be happy in a 5.5g.

I never knew such lovely fish could come from such nasty waterways!

Least killifish, which is a live-bearer and tops out at 1"

or prettier, the Pygmy killifish, tops out at 3 cm.

I have a small colony of Heterandria formosa (least killifish) in a 5.5 gallon.  They have been in this tank for 5 years.  For me, they breed quite slowly.  I am currently trying to get some growth in the colony with extra feedings.

So, I guess I'm native too!

I was really struck by the Killies Susan has.  Gorgeous little fish!

The killis in the five gallon tank aren't natives.  They are Fundulopanchax Gardneri from  Africa.  I got them from a Killifish auction.  They are beautiful fish.

I have some native killis in a 20 gallon tank.  They are bluefin killifish, native to Florida.  They are pretty, but not as flamboyant as the gardneri.

Cool stuff Mary!

Yeah, pygmy killies are sweet.  Tiny tiny tiny.  Here's a huge buck male I caught in the Blackwater River near Crestview, Fl.

Those are regular sized gravel, and the ring in the upper left hand is the reflection of the ring around my shutter that was less than an inch away from the fish.  You could ethically fit 40 in a 2.5 gallon with java moss. Tiny!  They live in water that's so skinny you don't even realize it's still "water".

Nothing like that local tho that's legal to keep.  Least darter are abundant in the upper Ottawa in Fulton County, but they're state special concern.

My bro and his wife are all about taking care of the environment, native gardening and so on, so native fish are a real fit for them. And they are absolutely the types to spread the word.   I have another brother that quit his accounting job for several years and sold his photographs of the Great Lakes area(they're amazing).  His goal was to let people know that we have some seriously glorious scenery and some awesome things to do for fun/leisure right here in the midwest that just gets overlooked or people don't even know it exists.   Apparantly it's genetic in my family to worry about these types of things. *grin*

My hope is the more awareness people gain about what is in our own backyards, the more interest they will have about preserving it.
