A friend gave me her 10gal, one that has sat with water in it but no fish for years(you have to know her).  I'm not worried about cleaning the undergravel or using the gravel because I am going to do a soil/sand substrate, but there is a LOT of deposit scale on the sides of the tank.

What do you folk find is the best way to get that hardened, white gunk off the sides of the tank?

yes vinegar and water but would stay away from razor blade as it is easy to scratch if angled to much i would use a regular algae scraper

If vinegar does not work try muriatic acid. You can buy it at pool supply stores. Be sure to follow directions on the bottle and ware rubber gloves and eye protection.

Thanks guys!  Is there a particular percentage vinegar to water? Knowing me I'd cause all sorts of damage with the razor, so I'll stick with the scraper and see how that goes first!

I used to use muriatic acid to clean the pools where I worked. Learned the hard way about safety with that stuff.  Still have a scar from getting a drop of it on my foot 12 years ago.  WOW did that hurt!

The acid shouldn't bother the silicone or the styrene frames on tanks, right?

muriatic acid is the same as hydrochloric acid, if you saw that in chemistry class

I've used vinegar. Sometimes you have to let it soak overnight to get the really thick stuff off. Unless you're experienced scraping glass with a razor blade, use an algae scraper instead.

Vinegar is already diluted (5 % acetic acid)-- just soaking it in water may soften it up enough.

Never had an issue with a razor blade-- cleans great-- a plastic putty knife may work ok.
