That is a basic bio-ball sump. Most likely there was a baffle there but needing to replace it depends on what you are wanting to do with it.
there would have been a horizontal plate on the left side to keep the balls in place and allow water to drain out to move into the next section.
I have never had good luck with the balls (not to say that others could or do) They became a trap/source of re-released N
the top tray on the left would also hold a filter pad and in some cases a charcoal layer stuffed between the pads. Again I had poor results with this for the same reason as above.
let us know exactly what you want from your sump and we can help get it layed out

Hey Steve,
That's similar to an old bio-ball setup I had...like Briney said, the top location on the left of the unit is for the filter pad and the bottom (missing) section was to suspend the balls without allowing them to fall below the water line. If you wanted to use the bio-balls again, it appears that all you would need is a bit of egg-crate for the bottom (it would sit on the four small plexi tabs), a bit of filterfloss/pad for up top, and a section of sponge for the middle of the bottom by the baffle. In my opinioin, egg-crate could be cut and fit a lot easier (and allow much better flow rate) than drilling a BUNCH of holes into a piece of plexi if you were trying to restore it to its original design. However, you could alter the design a slight bit and probably end up with a little better functioning unit. Depends on what you want to do...

Like Dave said, the baffle is not neccessary. I also have a wet/dry like that, that was used and i fixed up a bit. You'll need some eggcrate (light diffuser, in the electric/lights section) from lowes or home depot to use as a tray to hold your media. If you dont already have bio balls dont worry about getting any. User nylon potscrubbers like i have in the pic. They are dirt cheap and have more surface area than bio balls do. You'll also need a filter pad to place over the drip tray. You'll need a pump, return line, overflow, and overflow line. The bottom piece of screen and eggcrate are not needed, and im not sure why i even left them in there.
