The guppy "batch" from right around when I joined TRAC are big enough to see their colors-- in fact the male is showing more color every day!

These gups are dark bodied(a dark charcoal color) with white fins and tails.  VERY striking!  The females have some yellow in the tail, and the male is starting to get a bit of yellow in the tail too, but only like a small streak of color at the base of the tail.  He's also starting to show similar body coloring to the one I posted in the other thread.  A friend is giving me a 10 gallon and I  scored one on the LucasCountyCafe group too, so I am going to pull out these gups with the interesting colors and separate them from the rest of the tank.  I wish now I hadn't put the Endlers in with the gups!

I'm going to try to separate the guppies by color/ "sibling batch" and then we'll go from there.

I tried taking some pix, but spilled water all over my laptop before I could download them-- not sure if this computer will cooperate or not-- plus, my camera is soooo old the shutter speed is just too slow to get pix that are not blurry. The ones I posted before were a lucky accident from when I was just taking pix of the tank.  Anyhow, the point of my big story is that pix may or may not be coming tonight.

How fun!  Also consider separating them by sex.  If you do it as soon as you can tell them apart, you can keep them from breeding until you decide which ones you want to breed.

Just curious - Logically it would seem that you would have to use a FEMALE guppy that was born of the qualities that you are looking for too.

For example, if you breed a snakeskin delta male with a wild guppy female, you are not going to get snakeskin delta males.  I would think the female lineage would be just as important as the male.  Am I correct?

You would think so, but Guppegene was telling me that it is not uncommon to have gorgeously colored guppies NOT breed true.

Gene? Mike? QualityGuppies? Briney?  Any of you(or any other guppy breeders I don't know of that might be lurking out there) have time to chime in on this one?

The answer to this question can be very complex, when comes to World of guppies. “What we see is not necessarily what we get”, when  comes to color and genetics. Half - black allele are responsible for black pattern (tuxedo) covering peduncle area, there are sex linked, meaning it is found on X or Y chromosomes. It crosses over, found on chromosomes of IFGA guppies. In term of IFGA females, they are extraordinarily significant in transferring phenotype image genes and they are retain on X chromosomes. Regarding crosses with undomesticated lines we have to deal with specificity of unknown combination of genes. Crossing with snakeskin depends who is dominant, who is recessive, but we can determine by using a Punnett Squere theoretically what we can expect. So, further in forest, more trees. That’s why guppies are extremely fascinated because breeding combinations motivate you to go further and options are endless. According to my opinion there is no solid answer to any genetic guppy’ question just only speculation, because if we don’t breed for… twenty generation their genotype is not well-known established.

I wish I understood genetics better, I just have never taken the time to logically understand it in my puney brain.

So, if I wanted to play the game:  I have two strains of wild guppy (I'm weird that way, I like the plain wild guppy).  It would be very interesting to take a fancy guppy male or female and breed from the two strains.  What do you do with all the guppies?

I DON"T KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm giving some to Anime.  Want some?  I've got PLENTY and just can't bring myself to deliberately feed them to other fish.  It's not their fault there's so dang many of them!

(and by the way, I really, really like the Endlers-- very neat little fish!)

Poecilia Reticulata, or for simplicity of understanding, just guppy, is a huge chapter related to attractive small fish who turn out to be a scientific model  for a thousands of scientists all over the World, hobbyists  and guppy lovers. If you already decided, a guppy to be your passion for many years to come, and I hope you do, there is a great chance to get plenty of knowledge from best breeders also exchanging experience and expertise with them, just going to IFGA Show in Detroit, 19 – 20 of July of this year 2008.You will have a chance to see excellent guppies selection and lots of options to purchase if you wish. There are a lot of things to learn about different lines, breeding systems, aquarium ‘equilibriums, so I hope will see you at the Show in Detroit.

You notice pundam, guppgene did not answer the whattaya do with all the guppies question. Smoothed over it like butter.

Endlers? I have a 10 gallon tank full of them. I was thinking of moving them to a 20, but then I would have a 20 gallon full of them.  EXTREMELY prolific.  I do like them though.

I have had one of my wild strains of guppies in a 20 long for several years.  Funny, the population always seems constant.

If you feed them a little less often, they will not have as many babies.  I only feed my guppies/endlers every 2 to 3 days.  If I do a water change, then I am a softie and feed them after because they seem so happy at that time.
