I am seriously considering going back to school in the fall to obtain some sort of Biology degree. (Currently have an Associate of Applied Sciences). I would like to possibly look into a career in the marine area of a Zoo or possibly work in some sort of research facility. Obviously you are already in one of those positions. Is there any sort of advice, direction, help you could give me? What is normally required in these lines of work as far as education?

Bachelors in Biology for starters! Are you local? I would suggest a Biology program that has more "Whole Animal" Biology classes. In other words Zoology classes (Entomology, Mammalogy, Ichthyology ect...). Most Colleges now are so focused on Genetics, Molecular Biology and Cellular Biology that it is tough to find a college with a good Zoology curriculum. Locally, Bowling Green State University has a very good selection of Zoology courses and they have a very good marine Biology program. B.G.S.U. has a sister school in Southern Mississippi that does summer course work in the Gulf of Mexico on a boat.
If you are looking at working in a zoo or aquarium then there is a catch! They usually look for people with zoo or aquarium experience. How are you supposed to get zoo or aquarium experience if you never worked at one? Volunteer or do independent studies. Most aquariums require that you be S.C.U.B.A. certified also. If you are looking for a specific program the Oregon Coast Community College has a program for people looking for work in the public aquarium field.
