Last weekend I seperated two of my Bengaii's out of my frag tank and into a tank of there own. One of the bigger Bengaii's would chase these two and keep they up tight in a corner of my tank. Well I removed the two that he was chasing and place them into my Biocube.
Last night while feeding my tank I noticed that one of my bengaii's wasn't going to the food like normal he was just sitting by himself at the bottom of the tank. So I went in for a closer look and I see that his cheeks are puffed out and his throat pouch is extended. I can only imagine that he is carrying eggs to be that puffed out or he had his wisdom teeth removed like I did a couple of weeks ago!
Anyway this particular Bengaii was the fish that was chasing the other two and keeping them in a corner of my frag tank. I'm guessing that behavoir was due to the fact that he was getting ready to carry eggs from his mate.
So since yesterday was day one I'm going to have to keep my eyes on him for the next 15 - 20 days and see if he continues not to eat and has his cheeks puffed out. I'm going to start to make a makeshift Urchant to put into the tank that hopefully the baby bengaiis will use for protection. I also need to start setting up my brine hatchery and trying to figure out getting that to work to create the live food response for the babys.
I'm probably going to have to setup another tank to try and remove larger baby bengaiis so they don't starve and out compete the other little baby Bengaiis. I'll try to document all my success and failures as this process continues in hopes that others will attempt breeding this species since it is on the endanged species list.
If I can snap a picture of the male holding eggs I'll post that to this thread as well.

Great news, I wanted to get a couple of them from Aqua Hobbies, but by the time my tank was ready for them they went on the endangered species list so none for me.

RJ--I was at a certain store in Romulus yesterday (Won't say the name cause I don't think they are a sponsor. They probably had about 50 or so for 19.99 a piece or 36.00 for 2. These are tank bred and raised. (I was alos informed they have 2 horned shark eggs that they think will hatch. If so, this will be the first time they have been bred outside of a public aquarium setting.
On the plus side, although endangered, they were able to breed some Bangaiis and move them to a different location around Bangaii. The transplant has been effective. Looks like the numbers may be coming back. Sorry for no documentation. I just read this the other day. It was either in Aquarium Fish Intl. or somewhere on the Internet.

That's good news. I'm glad to see that people are breading them this type of thing helps not only to remove them from endangered list but also in time will help to reduce the cost of them. Simply because they are tank raised and not wild caught.

Congratulations. My breeding has hit a standstill. Can’t get the juveniles out of the tank, so if they are breeding they are being eaten as quick as they come out. I did end up with 3 broods though.

We don't discriminate against now sponsor stores on our site so you can mention Tropicorium. They breed bengaii's in house at Tropicorium. They were the first place I knew of locally that started breeding them. We like people to mention good things about stores on our site and where you can pick them up. We also encourage members that if you did hear on our site about a deal or something special at one of the stores please mention that you heard about it from our website.
As we try to get new sponsors a lot of them don't think our members shop in their stores so please let them know where you are coming from.
The one thing we don't like people doing oursite is publically bashing other fish stores for one reason or another. If you had a particular problem with a local store please do not go off a tangent about how they do everything wrong.
We rather encourage you as customers to go in and discuss your issues with the local fish store rather then using the site as a middle ground. Most of our sponsors do read the forums and will respond via PMs to complaints. They are very concerned for their customer base as well as the welfare of their store.

The Ones that are breeding are some of your Broods I purchased off of you from Aquahobbies swap a few months back.
So your fish are going to be grandparents!
