Brad, Do mangroves need a rooting media or can they stay bare root provided they are securely anchored to avoid damage???
if they need media what is the best choice.

I want to try growing mangroves. I poked around and found some good articles. According to what I've read, they can be grown in fresh, brackish, marine, or in a flower pot if kept moist enough. They can be grown in substrate or just suspended in the water. I couldn't find the site that showed the propagules being supported by a floating styrofoam disc to stimulate growth of the prop roots. That was cool.

I have seen them done with or without a substrate. At the zoo we have ours in pots that are hidden behind a fiberglass backdrop. I would think if you want what is going to give you the most sucess I would consider a sustrate (sand soil or whatever). How big of a plant(s) are you starting with?

I get them today but I would assume that they are only shoots.
I was figuring on floating them in foam but thanks for the article because I had no real clue if that was a good idea or not nor have I seen that article.
The tank is at the tail end of being cycled. Nutrients are still a bit higher than I want them to be and am adjusting circulation in the tank to help with dead spots so I think I should be producing better quality water over the next couple weeks. Maybe I will switch to substrate at that point
What substrate does the zoo use???

Ours are potted mangoves. It took a long time for the diatoms and algae to settle down in the tank with big buckets of soil in it.
