BUT, even if 95% of the people we try to reach don't care, there's still that 5%. I actually think we will realistically reach more than that, especially if we start with groups that are already inclined to thinking about the well being of other living things(science classes, scouting troops, etc).
I hope so. I think a major part of the abuse of pets is the chain stores like Petco, Petsmart & Pet Supplies Plus. They don't care what you do with the animal as long as you are paying them for it. If we could get through to them, and maybe educate their employees then we might be able to make a difference. The employees need to understand that you cannot keep an oscar in a 10 gallon, so then they won't sell an oscar to someone who just bought a 10 gallon, etc.
I think that would be the most beneficial thing that we could do. Educate the employees so that they could then educate the customers. They would have to be willing to give up a sale though.
actually getting through to the employees of a store like those is a little harder than you may think. what i'm trying to do is somewhat go around influences like those and make available a reasonable basic caresheet for first time fish keepers. the way i see it if there's nobody there to tell them while they're picking oscars and guppies maybe they'll grab one of our sheets and possibly think differently. i know most won't but there are a few that will.
what better way to get our club name out there than to offer a public service like this.
i walked into a local chain store on the way home today and talked to a few people i know there that are knowledgeable and have plenty of experience in fishkeeping and they looked at me like i was speaking a foreign language when i said toledo reef aquarium club. they are now fully ready to back this idea pending corporate approval.

I totally support this idea but lets make sure we go about it the right way. I know there are a lot of corporate chain stores out there that got a bad taste in their mouth from other Aquarium Clubs approaching them in the wrong way. Lets take this nice and easy and not pressure them and work on a relationship with the chains. Lay everything out on the table on what we are about and what we want to try and accomplish. I think we should start a new thread on this idea instead of posting in the club elections thread.

I'm sure I am not the only one here with connections to local big-chain pet supply stores, and the mangers I know are very approachable. Some of them will have to get things approved through corporate, others will have more individual say-- but I would put money on it that if we approach this right, we can get somewhere with it. As I said, I've seen it with the iguanas, and I for sure have seen it with the dogs & cats. Shoot, several stores now host rescue animals from local rescue groups rather than bringing in animals for sale. It can be done!
This kind of thing is part of what I do for PPI, btw.
