I've seen a number of new members recently. I'd like to extend an invitation to all to stop and tell us a bit about yourselves.

I will start. Name is Jay. Not only am I new to this site and reef keeping I am newish to Ohio. My family and I moved here a few years ago from Germany. I was in the Army and stationed over there. When I was able to retire I knew I needed a job and although I would have loved to stay in Europe an oppurtunity presented itself with the Federal Govt that I just could no pass up.

In Germany I had a 200 liter planted freshwater tank. Always wanted a saltwater just really hard to do when you move so much. Now that we are somewhat settled for a few years I have decided to try my luck with a little 14 gallon bio cube.  I am taking it slow and will see how it goes.

Besides the fish I enjoy spending a day wasting gas on my Honda Goldwing or out in a park flying my electric model planes.

Thanks for the invitation RJ.  I've dabbled in keeping freshwater fish over the years; mainly when our kids were growing up.  I thought it to be very educational.  Now I'm dabbling again.  I hope to use it for education again -- this time for the grandkids.

I've been active in photography over the years and have recently got into videography.  I hope to use these skills in creating a How-to video for my grandkids that live way up north.  It's not quite to the North Pole, but if you climb up on my son's roof you can see it from there.

I like what I've seen with this website so far.  People seem to be very helpful.

Thanks Again ~ Mick

Welcome Jay and Mick!

I'm new around here, too. I joined around the beginning of Oct and was lurking around a month or so prior to that.

See if you can make it out to the next meeting when they announce it. I attended the Oct meeting and it was great to chat with people that are also fish keeping obsessed!

I guess I am sorta new...been on the forum for a while but Friday will be my first meeting.  Met a few members in the past year when they've stopped by the house though.

I first started reefing back in ~1999.  Quickly moved up to SPS and had an awesome collection that I lost in 2001 when I tore down my college tank.  Took a break for a few years after moving to Toledo and started up again in 2007.  Now I have about 250 gal total system volume in a 65g display, 150g stock tank, 29g polyp tank, and a 20 gal quarantine/backup tank.  I've been keeping mainly zoanthids and montipora, though just recently got bitten by the acro bug again and am hunting down a few favorites.

See you Friday!

Tim

I've been on the forum for a while now, but last night was my first meeting. I kept freshwater tanks when I was younger, even breeding angels and discus. I have had a 75 gallon mixed reef for about 3 years now. I am in the process of a divorce and moving, so I am tearing down my tank for the time being. I have read on here and other sites a lot of great ideas that I am going to incorporate when I put my tank back together.

I for one would love to see some pics and a description of your seahorse tank. I tried Sea horses last summer but they met with an untimely demise, completely my fault. We are planing to give it another go in the future. So please share your tank set up and the feeding routine that goes along with these great little fish.

Hello,

Tim from Findlay here. I've been inconveniencing saltwater organisms since about 1985 when I first set up a rudimentary 29 gallon marine tank. It had a 24" NO grow light, an air powered UG filter, and small pebble-sized crushed coral.

I've had at least one SW tank almost continuously since. Currently I have a 120 that's been up for the last ~2 1/2 years with all of the fish being at least double that from a couple of my previous systems. Right now the 120 equipment inventory is as follows 2x 250W MH, 2x 96W PC, Lifereef sump and 'fuge, ASM G2 skimmer, DIY GEO look alike Ca reactor, ACIII controls the Ca Rx, Aquasurf, 2x Tunze 6100s, and lights. Spectrapure stand alone ATO, LunarTracker w/ 4 LEDs, approx 100lbs live rock, fish, and corals. This is the build thread I did on RC; http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1163749

I've been with the Findlay Fire Department for 25+ years. I'm also a diver with the Hancock County Sherriff's dive team. I could retire from the fire department any time after next November, but I like my job, and intend to stay for a few more years. Right now I'm recovering from surgery due to an on duty injury, and hope to golf, and do some diving with the team, Aqua Hut, and to catch some spiny lobsters in Florida this summer. My wife and I enjoy "beach time" whenever we can!

I'm right handed and do have some aquarium upgrades once I can use my right hand again, I'm waiting for some flanges to build an upgraded Ca reactor similar to the original one I built (the main upgrade is a professional, key holed flange I don't have equipment to make), with a matching second chamber, and a matching Kalk reactor. I got in on the Nano Reef group LED buy as well, I ordered enough for two of an eventual 4 modules to replace my MHs and PCs.

That's probably enough of me for now! Anything I can do to help somebody with the hobby I'm more than willing, just shoot a message! I've usually got some SPS, 'shrooms, or maybe a few zoas I can spare to help some one getting started.

Tim

Hi, my name is jeremy, i live in the laskey and bennett area i always had at least one aquarium  until about 10 years ago. To support my hobby i maintain the lucas county public safety radio system.

my wife bought me a 55 and stand for an early birthday present. i set it up as a freshwater community tank with low light live plants. i already have plans for the next 10 or so tanks :-) i want to set up a few single species tanks and a planted tank with better lighting. i also want to keep some of the lesser known livebearers. planning on attending a meeting soon. after i got the tank set up i started to look around and was shocked on how many local fish stores were no longer in business.

Welcome Jeremy!  It is sad how many of the Mom and Pop stores are gone.  Trilby's has a great selection of freshwater fish and plants.  Some of the bigger clubs' auctions are a good place to find the different types of livebearers.

I agree, trilby tropicas is a great store, i have been dealing with them since the early pet palace days.  the store i miss the most is harry's when it was on lewis, the old uy i think his name was Gilbert would take time to give me all the information i could handle for whatever fish i was thinking about buying when i was a kid.i saw a new store opening on navarre in oregon just before the old el matadors. the tanks were still cycling when i was in there. it looks like they bought out some of the old sweet feed store.

The American Livebearer Association convention and auction is this month up in Detroit.

I will be going to the auction, but I'm not sure about the Saturday sessions. You can't find any weirder livebearers that what you'll see there!

Jeremy and Perry-- I have freshwater planted tanks, and am going to be trimming some of my plants this weekend.  If either of you want some giant hygro let me know.  I'm in West Toledo, near the Jackman/Tremainsville/Sylvania intersection

June and I pet-sat a Veiltail goldfish for my boss at the end of 2009. We enjoyed his fish's personality so much that on Jan 1st we bought an 10gal freshwater, planted it, and got a baby Veiltail of our own.

We are mainly interested in fancy goldfish. We love the reds, yellows, silvers, and oranges, in contrast to our plants.

We have two 10gal planted tanks with a central wet/dry trickle filtration system that I made out of a 5gal.

Our favorite fish are Veiltail GF, Comet-tailed GF, and Fantail GF.

Our biggest accomplishment is our great looking planted wet/dry trickle filter that fits on the bookshelf below the display tanks!

June and I love the water at the Toledo Zoo and would absolutely love to go behind the scenes there!

I'm always looking for more plants to fill out our displays, so I will take any trimmings anyone would like to offer. We live in Trilby (NW Toledo).
