I have a 10 gallon aquarium with black gravel and some jungle ruins decor theam going on. this tank has been runing for about 5 weeks and is brackish water.  right now i have no fish in it but ive been thinking about a figure eight puffer.  does anyone else have any good ideas beside having a single puffer? (i dont like your average everyday fish, i rare enjoy oddballs)

thank you

Bumblebee gobies are brackish fish that stay small.  You'd need a group of six or so.  If you have some caves or hiding places, they could be kept with a puffer.

Don't archer fish get to be around 10 inches? A little big for a 10 gallon! They are a cool fish though!

There are lots of cool unusual livebearers that take brackish-

Ameca splendens (hard to find a good photo of them- they're very sparkly and irridescent)

The image “http://www.aquaworldnet.com/awmag/images/asplen.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

some of the smaller unusual mollys like P. caucana. http://www.amtra.de/images/caucana425.jpg

I remember Langhammer was taking some weird livebearers that wanted salt and epsom salts.

Indian glass fish- Chanda sp.

Several killies, including Jordanella floridae, various desert pupfish, Lucania goodei,

Adinia xenca.

The Adina are fun- the female is spotty and the male is stripey.

You can sometimes find the Lucania in with ghost shrimp at Peg Supplies Plus.

Belonesox maybe? There's a cutie for you!

Oh, I dunno- I would think that Anableps would take that crown- "four" eyes, four sexes, climbing out of the water. Wouldn't that beat spitting at flies? Heck- we had a neighbor that would spit at flies!

Or maybe a mudskipper?!?

Seriously, don't a lot of tetras spit at flying insects as well?

I have never heard of tetras spitting at insects!?  If they do, it would be interesting to see which ones do then at one of our meetings we could all bring a spitting tetra and have a distance contest!

hard to beat a manatee but may out grow the 10 shortly after birth

plus there is that whole site lic. thing LOL

I know its a bit campy but I really like the little puffers.  they stay pretty small and are cool looking

plus not spitting at  or killing of owners.

They think that there are two different species. We have had ours for 12 years and they are no longer then 5 inches.

At the zoo we used to have Anableps and mudskippers together in one tank. Archers are just easy to keep then mudskippers or foureyes but they all are very cool fish.

Cool! I want one! What is the name of the smaller species?

All Mollies can be aclimated to Full On Salt Water As well i know i have done it and if they had only been smart enough to stay away from the powerhead they would have been just fine!

Check out this site, these are some really good people! http://www.wilmasthecause.org/ They helped me out,i feel adding the site to my Sig is the least i can do.

I'm under the impression that SW shortens their lifespan

All mollies like BW, but the caucana are little, so they would do better in a 10 than big honking sailfins.

I'd like some glassfish, but only if I could get some that were not dyed.  I've never seen any.  I'd like some Belonesox, too, I need some predatory fish to cull my endler's for me.  Oooooo!  Oooooo!  And some archerfish!  They are so cool!

I don't know why there aren't more brackish tanks.  They are so much fun!

I've seen glassfish offered for sale without the paint. I wonder if they come up on the fishy lists, and if one of the local stores could get them if enough of us wanted them.

I've heard several top-notch guppy breeders say that Belonesox are essential to a good guppy breeding program (hear that, Briney?), and that's what they usually say at auctions too. I think they can eat a fish up to half their length, so they'd probably fix anyone's platy or swordtail problems as well. Heck, they'd probably eat 3/4" convicts.

That pair of desert gobies are really fun, and they're supposed to be easy to breed. I got them on a whim, but I'm glad I did. They will eat shrimp pellets, so they're not live-food-only as I had read.

I'll have to see if I can find a hygrometer (or maybe win one as a club door prize).

One of the stores around here had them at one time. It was either Gary's or Trilby's, don't quite remember. Might be worth it to give both a call.

Dyed fish are.....

What salinity are you keeping your gobies at Paul?

I'm not sure. I just dumped in x tablespoons per gallon of some aquarium salt I had sitting around, so it's somewhere between nothing and seawater. I should get a hygro and measure it, I suppose.
