who here is using a reef octopus or swc skimmer? what models? would you get again if you had to do it all over? do the tank size specs seem to be accurate or overrated like most? anything you can tell me about these would be much appreciated. i'm looking to get a new skimmer just trying to make my final decision on which model. as of right now i'm leaning toward the super reef octo xp2000i because of the bubble blaster pump and cone design but always like to hear other peoples first hand experience when possible. thanks for any input.

I've got a SRO 1000 something HOB skimmer that a guy threw in on a multi tank deal. He said it rocked in his tank, I haven't had time to mess with it. Not much help I know, but looking forward to your review!

I have two Coralvue Reef Octopus BH800s skimmers,
Just got a replacement impeller for one. (comes with magnet)
They are great skimmers! They work hard and make lots of skimmate.
I run them fairly wet.
One is considerably quieter than the other, but neither is too loud.
Miles ahead of my Tuze 9010.

Sorry I didn't see this post until now. I'm running a Reef Octopus Reef Octopus DNW 200
Recirculating Skimmer. It's a GREAT until that pulls lots of nastly gunk which is amazing considering the low bioload I have in the system. You beat them for the money in my opinion.

that's good to hear so many good things about these skimmers. has anyone noticed any quirky things with theirs that i should look out for? like touchy water depths or anything. i just started working on cleaning up the "skimmer tank" today i still need to reseal it and put a baffle in because it's going to double as a frag tank. so still a ways off for me unfortunately but it'll happen lol.

I've been away on vacation... ;-) I had a SWC B160 that worked pretty well. It was on par with an ASM G2 that I compared directly when I had my 120. The SWC construction was much heavier and of much better materials than the ASM, the Sicce pump drew a minuscule current, less that 30W IIRC so it was very efficient. Like a lot of skimmers it was sensitive to water level changes just like the ASM.
I've never used anything by Reef Octopus so I can't make any comparisons there... Hope this helps!

thanks everyone. it does help a lot to hear good things about what i bought and to reaffirm all the rumors i have heard on them. i'm hoping in the next few weeks i'll have my skimmer/frag tank up and running and i can put in my two cents as well. till then i just see the thing sitting there dry and the anticipation is killing me lol.

alrighty so my skimmer has only been up about 24 hours or so so there isn't much to report. but this thing is a beast. the construction makes my asm g2 feel like a childs play thing. it's much thicker and higher quality acrylic than any skimmer i've had. the seams are great too. not just slapped together with some epoxy. the bubble blaster pump runs like a raped ape. i now completely understand why they are pretty adament about their 5.75" water depth. i started out and the water level was at 6.25" with the outgoing water valve all the way open and it was still overflowing out of the collection cup. this pump is really no joke and draws so much air that the water looks like milk. i can honestly say i don't have a single complaint about this skimmer yet. i'm very impressed and even in a newer tank with extremely clean water it's still finding something to skim. check it out.

wow that thing pushes a lot more air than my pump does. I wonder if there isn't something wrong with mine. Guess I'll have to tear it apart and find out.
Looking good though!!!

what pump is on yours? this has a bubble blaster that just sucks air like no tomorrow. your ail line may be undersized as well

This is the skimmer and pump I have. It doesn't look like they sell the original pump that came with it anymore....which is pictured. Mine works well, but just doesn't move that much air through the neck into the overflow cup. My skimmer is also a lot larger....so maybe it's just a illusion...not sure. It sure does pull some nasty stuff out.

weird it doesn't even tell you what pump that uses. i can't find it anywhere else either. in any case just from the pic i can tell you it's not the same pump or size of tubing i have. i believe it's a sicce pump just from the looks of it. still a great skimmer either way. do you prefer the recirculating skimmers like that?

I do just because of my setup.
180g DT 125 sump located in the basement.
I split the return line so that part goes into my skimmer, the rest into the sump. I wanted it external because the foot print is so large, I didn't want to chew up a large portion of my sump. I also run a external return pump.
Here is a link to my build on the FARC website, which I run. I haven't spent any time on since I upgraded it, hence the broken header picture.
