Donor Program Introduction

The idea of the donor program is to generate a pool of coral fragments available to TRAC members, whether they are long standing members or those relatively new to the club. A coral enters this program when a club member has a species which they are willing to fragment. This may be a coral that they have in their tank or a coral which they are purchasing intentionally to enter into the donor program. Sometimes several club members may decide to pool together to purchase a coral for this purpose.

A thread is then started in this forum for that Donor Coral. The first post will give the coral name (scientific and common, when possible), describe the coral, current and recommended tank conditions, lighting, etc. That post should also include one or more photos of the coral. Those who enter the donor coral into the program will put their name(s) under a HAVE list. Those that are interested in recieving a fragment of that coral will then reply and add their name to the WANT list. Also, when adding yourself to the list, include first your TRAC handle and then your real name. If your handle IS your real name, feel free to only list it once.

This coral is then fragmented and distributed to those interested in having this specimen in their tank. Those recieving these fragments are known as Sponsors and should be added to the HAVE list. When these donated fragments have doubled in size, they should be re-fragged and distributed to those that are next on the WANT list.

Donor Program Thread Template

The thread should start with the word DONOR. For example, if I have Strawberry Zooanthids that I can frag, the title would be "DONOR: Strawberry Zooanthids". Below is an exampple of the thread contents, please copy this template and change the details as appropriate for your frag.

quote:
DONOR: Strawberry Zooanthids

I will have 5 strawberry zooanthid polyp colonies.

Each will be small, but will grow under VHO or MH lights.
Each is free to a member of the club providing that.....
  1. They provide an adequate environment for it to grow.
  2. They are at the next meeting to receive a colony
  3. They describe how it grows for them under their conditions, and what those conditions are.
  4. They promise that once they are twice the size they are now, they will donate a colony the approximate size of the original donor colony.
If you wish to be a sponsor....reply to this list. The first five will get a colony. The next people on the list will receive frags from the Sponsors when the colony has doubled.

HAVE:
Aquatic Aquaman (Scott Cline)
And then following posts might be as follows:
quote:
HAVE:
Aquatic Aquaman (Scott Cline)

WANT:
FishE (Corey Troyan)
AnnArborBuck (Doug Roth)

Uncomfortable and hopefully unnecessary subnote:

This program will work much on the honor system. That is, when you recieve a coral, you are verbally contracting to take good care of it and then pass it along when it has doubled in size. Neither I, nor anyone else will play the role of Donor or Sponsor police. However, if someone does not follow their end of the deal, that may restrict their future participation in the program.

The Green Star Polyps that Zeeman donated to myself are doing great. Every so often my anemone will try to wave some tentacles at them, and once my brittle star knocks over the small unattached piece of LR the polyps live on, which caused it to fall over, scarring the polyps for a day

But they've been holding up real well, and I think are just starting to spread, I've seen at least 2 new heads that weren't there before

Since there seems to be some people interested in this program again I think I'll give this thread a bump.

howdy.  new to both the area and to the hobby.  i'm planning a mantis tank build, but would love to try growing some coral at the same time.  is the donor program still active?  i am planning to make the next meeting, where i'll say hi and introduce myself to everyone.

Yes the program is always active. It does not appear anyone has posted anything they want to donate lately in this section but you can always start a thread in the Donor section seeing if anyone has anything to donate. If not, you can go in the classified wanted section and see if anyone has anything they would like to sell or trade.

As the next meeting nears, the meeting thread usually gets quite active with members sharing what they have that they would like to sell or trade at the meeting. You will be able to get in on some items there.

Hi Lion!

I'm sorry you haven;t gotten a welcome letter yet, that's my fault.  I'm having computer issues so nobody's getting anything until I get that dealt with. But I promise it isn't personal!

Welcome to TRAC!  Did you find our new-person section on the forum so you can post about yourself and read about the rest of us?

Glad to have you with us and look forward to meeting you,

I saw you posted, and when i tried to get to that page to see my computer locked up and I ran out of time. I'll get there eventually!

And yeah, we do have a really nice group of folks here.  It's very cool how willing people are to share both stuff AND knowledge.

The corals that I have for grab in the Donor Program are no longer with me.    But new ones will be added for sure in a few months.

I though for sure Buk would post something on this...he was trying to get a PIF thing going a little while back.  I knew that this was posted long before his attempt and nobody really responded for a while, so I threw in a few extra frags to Buk at the last meeting hoping that he would post them here once they grew out some for him....that way at least something might start taking off with it.  I will have some more to share in a few months, but I am currently running thin on most of my stuff as far as frags go.  I have a feeling Buk will have the dragon eye zoos I pitched in reproducing quicker in his system than I do in mine, so I hope he at least posts those here later on if the green milli doesn't do all that well for him.

But baby, the whole tank could crash if we don't get it...do you really want that to happen?

I have a few kenya trees for anyone interested at the Jan meeting.

I'd like to know if anyone has any SPS for the donor I'd really like to find some Acropora (Blue or Purple).

When I get back from Christmas "vacation" at my parents I can hook you up with a frag of palys that are super hardy and decent growers. No cost of course.

I've got some major fragging to do in the new year.
