Who runs a display deep sand bed?
You have to remember too that once biofilms have colonized the substrate, nothing really goes anywhere for long. Even if you have a big powerhead fall down and blow straight into the substrate (which happened a few times to me with all that pocillop...

Toledo Reef Aquarium BBQ Picnic/Meeting Saturday August 30th
Sadly, I'm going to have to bail. I've been offered a free laptop and Saturday is the only day I can go and get it from West Michigan for the next month and a half (which given that schedule, yeah, this is gonna change my life - and as a grad studen...

Who runs a display deep sand bed?
Hi Burks,
I used deep sandbeds in all my systems and really enjoyed their benefits (both bacterial and as habitat for macroinvertebrates) and their aesthetic appeal. I used Sugar Fine Oolitic as a 3" base and then created a perforated surface using...

What do you suggest?
Morgan, I think you're right, you don't want to use that tank. Your footprint is 36 x 12 x 23 (length, width, depth), right?
Scott is also right, wide footprint, shallow tanks are the real deal.
I think there's some confusion on what is "deep" a...

new toys and boy am I geeked
Dave, seriously consider parting with $300 and get a Pentax Optio or Olympus Stylus camera (I've been impressed with both). You can find a lot of the later models for either at $200 now, might even look for used and find an even better deal. You'll...

10 Mile Creek excursion
Starting out with young fish is the only way you'll be able to keep them successfully. So you're off to the best start.
And I wouldn't feel a single drop of guilt, ladies. It's not like that species is "on the verge" or something. Their numbers ...

10 Mile Creek excursion
The photo doesn't show him it conclusively, but yeah, I'm pretty sure you have a johnny darter there. I've sampled in Tenmile and the Ottawa extensively for almost 15 years and I've never caught a greenside. It's absence is extremely curious, becau...

10 Mile Creek excursion
Pfew, good. I thought my system resilience hypothesis was out the door :)
The darter looks like a big johnny darter. The middle is a white sucker. The 3rd one, I need to see it's head better. That could be 5 different things :)

10 Mile Creek excursion
Top is a creek chub, yes, that's a largemouth bass, and now you've got me worried that we've witnessed the fastest expansion of round gobies known in these here parts, there are no greensides in the Ottawa for some unexplained reason. Do the "darter...
